Missing access rights to other partitions

I have windows 7 dual boot with Ubuntu 12.04 installed in another partition

How can I edit my documents and copy files or create folders in my other three partitions?

Trying to edit a doc I get

This doc can't be edited, possibly due to missing access rights. Do you want to edit a copy of the doc?

I used NTFS configuration tool to mount my drives

I got my permissions access to other partitions back with NTF configuration tool

Tried to install, Ubuntu 12.04 from CD onto "blank hard drive", started install....error message...indicating "no root partition".
How do I "prepare" a hard drive that's blank...to accept "required partition(s)" without knowing what is required ?
