Newbies Disk Full - Help

Asked by GraemeJoy

Sorry! I know you have dealt with this before, but I bet we all started here. Second hand ASUS 900 and can't load anything, trying to re install Ubuntu 11.10.

Disk Usage Analyzer shows Total filesystem capacity 100% 23.5 GB, Total filesystem usage 19.5% 4.6 GB

As it is new to me I don't need or have any personal data or information that I need to keep but I would like to re install 11.10 that I have on a bootable USB, when used to boot through the USB and F2 starts for a while and crashes out not enough disc space.

Go on tell a newbie one more time, Please.;-)

Thanks

Are you saying the bootable usb drive won't complete the boot at all? I ask because the boot live-CD isn't supposed to use the hard drive at all; just ram and spare space on the usb stick itself. Is the usb stick a bit tight for spare space? Maybe you need to put a fresh boot image on the stick? If you do want to do that, you might like to see if 12.04 will work OK. It's got a whole lot of improvements over 11.10 and seems to run faster on most hardware.

Hi actionparsnip, Sorry I do not know what that line instruction means.

Hi b-drake, I don't have a cd drive, so was using the USB with 12.04 on it, have re formated the USB and re download 12.04 so 4gb stick is fresh.

Hi sourav, run gparted from SystemSettings, read the dedoimedo artical, had to sit down and have a black coffee.

Thanks all for your speedy assistance, gparted shows I have three drives,

/dev/sda1 ext4 size 2.7 GiB used 2.7 GiB UnUsed 109.73 MiB Flagged BOOT

/dev/sda2 extended 1014.00 MiB Used _- Unused -

/dev/sda5 Linux Swap 1014.00 MiB Used - Unused -

In another place GParted shows

/dev/sdb1 ext3 media/Home size 15.03 Gib Used 539.35 MiB Unused 14.5 GiB
unallocated size 1.29 MiB Used - Unused -

and

/dev/sdc1 FAT 32 /cdrom PENDRIVE size 3.73 GiB Used 716.28 MiB Unused 3.03 GiB Flag BOOT

Eh .... ? is everything running from the smallest /dev/sad1 ext4 partition

Many thanks for the head scratching

Graeme
