Read only filesystem: i can't delete songs from my mp3

Asked by Amélie Poulin

I have a Coby 4G mp3 player ( MP620-4G ) and when I connect it to my computer and delete songs, the trash doesn't gets empty when I click ''empty trash''.

Result, the songs are still playing in my mp3. It says in french:

Erreur à la suppression du fichier : Système de fichiers accessible en lecture seulement

What does it mean ?? Will I ever delete those songs from my mp3 ??

Thnkxx for answering.

Error removing file: File system read-only

You will need to remount the file system as writable.

Can you give the output of:

mount; lsb_release -a; uname -a

Thanks (obviously with the device attached)

When you last unplugged the device, did you use the safe removal option or did you simply pull it oyt of the USB port.

I just pulled it out, there is no option on my screen where I can take it out ''safety'', I just pull it out like everyone does with his or her device at home .

There is in WIndows, Mac ad linux. Right click the device on the dekstop on it is there:

Ubuntu:

(also the same in Unity)

By ripping the device out, the caches don't get flushed and the device isn't gracefully unmounted. This causes all manner of issue and is WHY it is coded into the OS.It is required. You are abusing your hardware and is more than likely why the device is read only. The device is marked as dirty. This is especially required with FAT based file systems which have very little robustness and is common for MP3 players.

yes but you should and it's why you are in this mess.

i suggest you connect it to a windows system and chkdsk the device once the filesystem gets repaired, safe remove the storage using the icon in the tray and it will be fine

If not you can always just copy the data off, format it then put the data back on.

Can you help with this problem?
