Increasing RAM on laptop

Asked by Doug Price

I bought a laptop with 512MB RAM and Ububtu and Win XP (dual boot) preinstalled.
There are 3 HDD partitions: 8.2GB (I assume the root partition for the Ububtu OS), a 760MB partition (I assume a swap partition), and a 28.2GB NTFS partition for Wundows (dual boot system).

In addition, there's a file ubuntu\disks\swap.disk in the ntfs partition

a. what's the difference -- which is the ubuntu swap file?

b. I upgraded the memory from 512MB to 2GB; do I need to change the swap file and/or partition, and if so how do I do this?

Thanks

Unless you plan to use hibernation, you do not need to change anything.

If you need hibernate you should make the swap the same size as your RAM, otherwise you'll be ok (unless you start using more than 2Gb RAM, which is enough for normal use in Ubuntu).

Can you help with this problem?
