Can't Find Root Password

Asked by Biraj Parikh

I cannot access Synaptic or the Ubuntu Software Center because I have accidently made my admin account into a standard account. I have tried all possible passwords and was unable to access Synaptic. Can somebody please tell me how to figure out my root password so I can download packages. Thanks.

I turned the whole computer off, then started recovery console to do as you said, but I was unable to access the root shell prompt. I have Ubuntu 11.10.

I need to have the root password to unlock that option which I am trying to get, so that won't work.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LostPassword should be up to date.

@Enrico: with 11.10, http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword is now obsolescent.

Can you help with this problem?
