xubuntu photo import problem

Asked by Peter

In xubuntu 11.10 when I plug in the camera through USB nothing happens.

The only way I can see it is by running Nautilus and the I can click on the camera which starts my preferred gThumb for import. Thunar wont work and Nautilus must be run in a terminal or wrecks the screen config but is okay next login. Starting gThumb and clicking on File-->Import from-->Removable device does not show the camera.

As explained I can get the photos through Nautilus but the Thunar bug needs fixing or an incorrect setting I have could be the problem. Any ideas?

if you edit your nautilus running files in /usr/share/applications you can add the option:

--no-desktop

and it will not start trying to draw the desktop. I'm guessing you don't use Gnome desktop. Are there any bugs reported with gvfs or gthumb for this?

As a dirty workaround, you could add an entry in /etc/fstab and it will mount automatically when inserted, rather than relying on gvfs/nautilus to mount it for you.

You could also try shotwell or f-spot (f-spot uses mono, not sure of your opinion on mono so its good to mention)
