after upgrading to ubuntu 10.04lts when starting the neo laptop it always scans disk first

Asked by Leon Mariano Guerrero

Problem: when starting the laptop instead of going to ubuntu immediately it goes to like terminal mode and scans the disk. Scanning takes a long time - like an hour but no report of succesful scan.
hardware: my laptop is a neo basic with intel core 2 dual processor
software: ubuntu 10.04lts
details of the problem: The problem started when i upgraded from the previous ubuntu to the present 10.04lts. Prior to upgrading
no problem whatsoever.
steps taken: when the problem is occuring, I would type "checkdisk " and enter. And this solves the problem somewhat because
it aborts the scanning process and goes to ubuntu. Now I am able to use the laptop. This has been my constant solution for the past 4 weeks now. However, now i notice that there is frequent hanging of the keys, mouse and software altogether.

Can you kindly please give some recommendations. Thank you.

An hour does seem like a long time, but it depends upon how large the filesystem is. If the scan does not complete, and by typing something, you are interrupting it, it will be put off for next boot. A scan will be triggered when the system was not shutdown properly, or after 25 or 30 reboots. You can change the number of reboots which causes a check with a program like tune2fs (check the man pages for how to run it, man tune2fs). Let the scan finish normally, watch when you shutdown the system and make sure it turn off by itself (and not by you pushing the power button), and see if you can reboot with no scan. 10.04 has no problems of this nature I'm aware of -- the later releases have some shutdown problems which force manual intervention with the power button and this will cause a scan next boot.

Can you help with this problem?
