Unable to mount my WD external HD (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS)

Asked by Franco

I have upgraded from 9.10 karmic koala to 10.04 Lucid Lynx and having now problem to mount my external WD HD.
It was succesfully mounted with previous release.

This seems to be well know problem and should have been fixed in this release with lates version of the hdparm package (I have the 9.15-1ubuntu9)

Any help will be appreciated

I have collected following logs that show usb device initially connected and soon after disconected

I did some googling.
1-Could you unplug all others USB devices and retry.
2-How old is the computer ?
3-Which fixed other USB devices do you have ?

Thanks Oliver

I tried to to disconnect the only usb device I have (a webcam) and the connect again the external HD. Problem is still the same

The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600. Certainly not a new one. However this is alos one of the reason I decided to remove Window and install Ubuntu. The performance are far much better. Also to be considered is that with previous Ubuntu version I didn't have such problem.

As I said only one usb web cam is currently connected. On time to time I connect a multifunction Epson Printer and a Samsung laser printer.

Please advice

Thanks Oliver

in its current configuration the computer has more than 2 GB of Memory.
That's should make it compliant with the Ubuntu hardware requirements.

Hello, I did some search on Google, but I saw nothing conclusive.
In some threads, issues are related to availability of EHCI and UHCI bus.

Could you run the following commands:
sudo lshw -short | fgrep -i USB
sudo lshw -C storage
lsusb # please tell me which is external drive, if it is displayed

Could you check on different USB plug. All plugs are not the same (protocol different or mechanical tolerance).

I continue to search.
You could also request help on http://ubuntuforums.org/, http://askubuntu.com and http://jeremy.linuxquestions.org/

Hello Oliver

first of all thanks for your support. At the moment I am at abroad with no chance to log in on my home pc. I should be able to collect the info when I am back in 2 weeks time.

I am only wondering how can I collect the info if the device is never really mounted?

Indeed I am wondering if I should open a bug.

thanks a lot
Franco

Yes, you should open a bug against udev, so I will face less issue about auto-mount!
Currently, I'm more searching a workaround.
You can collect data about the chain from USB bus detection of device to nautilus display of icon. I think this chain is broken somewhere, but I'm only currently building my expertise about this chain.

Can you help with this problem?
