Do you have issue only with external mass memory storage (disk, USG stick, camera, ...) or also with other USB devices (mouse/keyboard, webcam, ...) ?$
Do you see the disk with command:
    lsudb

It does seem to be a kernel issue.

With the ubuntu kernel , sometimes USB keys work and then fail a few min later. (with errors in syslog)
USB HDD's don't seem to work at all. (using a 2.5" HDD powered from usb)
lsusb doesn't find any plugged in devices after the problem occurs.
Have tried removing the usb xhci_hcd module and reloading to no avail.

I found using the following kernel works for USB devices. (am using AMD64 edition of Ubuntu 11.10)
http://packages.debian.org/sid/kernel/linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64
Problem with this kernel is that the wifi has issues connecting to access points.

I have been trying the latest kernels from the 3.2-rc series in the hope that USB & wifi work but no solution there yet.
With the earlier RC kernels RC4&RC5 the wifi wouldn't work with RC6 & rc7 it work's but the USB doesn't.

I know that it's possible to download the latest WIFI drivers and compile them against your kernel header files if they are installed. My next move will be to try that for the above debian kernel.

Conclusion:
The debian kernel provides USB but no WIFI.
The Ubuntu kernel provides WIFI but no USB.

Too technical for me. Could you convert question into a bug against "linux".

Can you help with this problem?
