Problems with accessing files on mounted NTFS partition after upgrade to 11.10

Asked by Ryan

Hi -

I just upgraded to 11.10. I have an NTFS partition that I share files between Ubuntu and Windows. In 11.04 I used Storage Device Manager "assistant" to change the owner, group, read write permissions, etc, so I could mount and access files on the partition just as I would files in my home folder. However, after upgrading to 11.10 the settings were set to default, and now I can't get them back.

When I use Storage Device Manager "assistant", I can change the owner and group from "root" to my username, but I can't uncheck "Mount file system in read-only mode", nor can I change any umask settings. Actually, I can uncheck them, but when I close and reopen the "assistant" dialog, these changes revert.

When I restart, the owner and group for the mounted partition is changed to my username, but if I open the properties -> permissions tab, and try to change "Folder access" setting in any of the categories (Owner, Group, Other), it won't let me select anything other than "Create and delete files".

So, when I try to open newly added files to the partition, I can't open them. I get an "Error opening file: permission denied" message.

Please Help. Thanks

If it is an internal partition I suggest you add the partition in /etc/fstab and you can set the ownership and access of the files.
