how to get a back up of files if ubuntu doesnt work ?

i m new to ubuntu ....
i have been using ubuntu 11.04 for last 4 months ....
i m loving it ....
but twice it happened that bcoz of some reason my ubuntu os was not working ....
once it was due to upgradation from 11.04 to 11.10 in which there was an internet problem bcoz of which upgrade did not happen ...
and i was i not able to use my computer ....
finally i had to reinstall my older os ie ubuntu 11.04 n then i upgraded to 11.10 ...
however i lost my data ....

if in future this happens then is there any solution ?
.... i have a cd of 11.04
.... can i use it to start my machine to take a backup ?

plz help ...

Yes, you can use a Live CD of Ubuntu for mount your partition and perform a backup of your file on a usb pen or other hard disk or what you want.
