No Devices Found....

I installed UBUNTu 11.04 about 3 months ago. About a month ago my computer wouldnt turn on and upon opening it said ..................no devices found....I figured my hard drive burnt up.....I just got home and decided to try the computer to see if I could do something it WORKED! Why did it say no Devices found for a month?? Can I prevent this from happening again?

Might be some faulty connector seems hardware problem...
