Hard Disk Damaged?

Asked by Iqbal

Hi,
I have a 500 GB HDD on a laptop. The laptop is dual boot with Vista and Karmic.
I upgraded to Natty. After one day the disk crashed. Now I can not install neither Vista nor ubuntu on it.

Normally Vista takes 30-45 minutes to install on a normal laptop. When I tried on this hard disk- it took 4 hours to expand 65% files. Therefore, I aborted the operation. Vista also informed that disk is faulty and needs replacement.

I deleted all partitions finally there is only one partiton of 465 GB. I tried to install Natty. At the time of copying files - it says that installer crashed. During the installation process the the massage keeps popping that a disk is reporting health problems. The same (installer crashed) happened earlier also.

There is no physical damage to the HDD.
I can boot from LiveCD also. HDD is recognised by GParted also. Disk utility says that disk failure is imminent.

Question are:
1- How to ensure that hard disk is damaged?
2- Is there a way to correct it?
3- After on day of installing Natty- it crashed. Thereafter HDD started reporting health problems. There was some problem with Ubiquity also. I have doubt that HDD crashed because of Natty? Should I install Natty again?

Booting from Ubuntu install cd perform a fsck on your partitions...

to see your partitions from terminal (ctrl + alt + t to open) type:

sudo fdisk -l

then type something like this to perform the partition check

sudo fsck /dev/sda1

answer yes to correct errors

you should buy another harddisc because your current one has problems. its a very bad idea to use a damaged harddisc because the posiibility of losing all data is high.

natty has nothing to do with the damaged harddisc, sometimes harddiscs fail

you can install "smartmoontools" and check the smartstatus with it

Earlier disk had 7 seven partitions, 3 with Vista and 3 with ubuntu. Now I have removed all partitions using GParted. Now there is only one partition /dev/sda1 with ext4 type.

Hi,
I installed smartmontools and ran this test. The output of the test is given below:
Please tell the result of this test and tell whether the disk is curable or useless.
