unable to access folders on slaved apple hardrive

Asked by stan barker

I have an old apple computer that has died. Hard drive is slaved (jumpers set to cable select) to Ubuntu 10.10 hard drive. When I try to access folders to retrieve pictures, I get a message that I do not have the needed permissions. How can I reset those permissions?

If you run:

gksudo nautilus

You will have all the access you need. Why do you not have a backup? This would remove the need to mess around like this...

The old computer came from a relative who never did a backup.

When I tried your suggestion I got the following message:
(have I done something wrong?)

(nautilus:2194): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_value_free: assertion `value != NULL' failed
eedesktop.ConsoleKit.Manager.GeneralError: Unable to lookup session information for process '2194'
Nautilus-Share-Message: Called "net usershare info" but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

Don't worry about that. Can you access your data?

Can you also give the output of:

lsb_release -a

Thanks

Still no access. When I enter that into "Terminal", I get:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: maverick

If it is supposed to gain me access to the files I want, then no, it is not working. I even tried a re-start just in case.

I have access. Thanks for the help and just color me stupid. It took me a couple of tries to realize that when I run the nautilus command and the root widow opens, that is my doorway into the old apple hard drive. I knew if any OS would do for me what i needed, it would Ubuntu. Again, thank you very much and to all in the Ubuntu development community, thanks for making such a great OS.
