Syncing

Asked by Ron

Dear all,

I am familiar with Ubuntu One and Dropbox and in fact use both of them quite regularly. I wonder however whether there is some other (perhaps more effective and cheaper) method which can sync two computers (both of which are set up with Ubuntu OS). Both Dropbox and Ubuntu One could be costly once you go beyond the first two GB. Hence my interest to be able to sync for instance my Music and Video folders on my computers without any costs attached to it.

Beyond syncing files, I am also trying to understand how I can sync my contacts/address book and calendar. I use KOrganizer Calendar and KAddress Book on both computers. Is there anyway I can sync these? I have heard about the "cloud software" offered by Google. People seem to use Google Calendar to sync their calendars. Does this mean I have to switch to Google Calendar and abandon my use of KOrganizer Calendar? Can someone also tell me more about how to set up Google Calendar on two different computers and how to sync them?

Appreciatively,

Ron

You can use rsync to sync between the systems yourself, no need for a 3rd party.
