OSX sees but won't access Ubuntu mounted USB drive

Asked by Thomas Smith

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 PC, a windows 7 laptop, and a mac book pro with OSX 10.5.8. All are networked, and all three "see" each other on the network. The Ubuntu PC has a shared public folder on the internal hard drive and a USB storage drive. The windows 7 machine can see and access the USB hard drive and the shared public folder. The OSX machine can see and access the public folder, but only see the USB hard drive. It won't access it. It says that it can't find the original file or something about an alias. I have tried everything, including reinstalling Ubuntu. I want to be able to access the USB drive from the OSX computer so I can use the Ubuntu shared USB hard drive as a network storage device.

Well, yes and NO! It seems that OSX can only handle file names up to 15 characters long. Because of the computer default using Ubuntu, it usually recommends a file name that is the user name, computer name. In my case it was Ubuntu-Dimension-4600-i. If you count, that is 23 characters. I changed it and viola, Mac is networking. SADLY, I have managed to mess up my /etc/hostname file and now I have to manually restart samba to get my windows 7 laptop to connect to the same USB hard drive. Beware any name longer than 10 digits!

Can you help with this problem?
