Need to check disk? (like MS Windows)

Asked by Onno

Hi,
One of the things that is really annoying about MS Windows is the disk checking. It absolutely can't wait. Not even when you are about to send out a 20.000.000 euro contract. It just can't wait. And you can't cancel. It needs to check every byte and you need to wait.

To my surprise this is also part of Ubuntu it seems. At some point, after some time, the disk checking becomes really essential and then same as with MS Windows it can no longer wait, no matter what. Cancel is no longer option. We need to check now. Your 20.000.000 euro customer will happily wait for the contract past the deadline. Just explain that disk checking became essential, they will understand.

I suggest we rethink this feature. It should absolutely be possible to cancel disk checking at any time. Hardly a discussion?
Best Regards,
Onno

You should be able to abort them by pressing the appropriate key -- I think it is escape...

Alternately:
Option 1:
* Don't shut down your computer -- just suspend it instead.

Option 2:
* Change the number of mounts between checks, so this is of reduced frequency. Doing this is a little tricky.

@actionparsnip: submitting this as a idea is too hard. Tried it. But what project does it relate to? Don't know.

@mycae: I was pressing esc (and a lot of other keys). Esc did do something but didn't cancel. It temp. switches to a terminal window but then the terminal windows shows a message that disk checking needs to happen and then it continues. In the end I just let it run.

There is explained how to make it check only a certain day instead of mounts.
