i plug my ipod touch into computer but does not acknowledge being plugged in does not show up any where

you should install the follwing repositiory to your software sources:
https://launchpad.net/~pmcenery/+archive/ppa
then add the gtkpod application from the software center.
This will allow you to synch the ipod and your Ubuntu.
