All the files moved to lost+found after fsck

Asked by ikey

Im using ubuntu 10.10 dual booted with windows 7.

im a noob

After a power failure the following error appeared "no init found. Try passing init=bootarg". So after googling for a while i ran a fsck using backtrack4 live cd.
But now it wont even boot. When i logged in using live CD i found all the files are moved to lost+found, including kernel and grub.

So far i have tried installing grub, which takes me to grub2 menu when rebooted. Thats as far as i go ...
At last i used windows 7 CD and recovered windows 7 partition.

Pls help me out. I dont want to lose the stuff on my ubuntu partition.

First thing first: To recover documents from your broken Ubuntu system, you can boot from the Ubuntu Desktop Install CD, select Try Ubuntu, and then copy them from the Ubuntu partition on your hard drive to some other volume (for example, you could copy them to your Windows partition).

ok, so i used backtarck4 live cd to move the files to overcome permission issues.

And i have to format ubuntu partition and reinstall it?

You don't necessarily have to do that, though that might be your best option. Your system was badly damaged; the most sure-fire and possibly easiest way to fix it might be to wipe the disk and reinstall. Alternatively, you could try manually restoring the files from lost+found to their original locations. Searching Google for "lost+found recover" (without the quotes) will bring up some pages that may be relevant, if you choose to attempt manual recovery (or if you need help recovering documents from lost+found).
