Mounting External Drives USB in ntfs and fat 32

Asked by Andrew Tipton

just came to Linux - brand new - great windows knowledge, no linux knowledge whatsoever.
Have a cie' hardrive 250 gb with 6 partions and years of info that is critical.
Getting error message:
DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
and more importantly getting this:
( long explanation about why not, and then instruction to edit the fstabs file, which i am loathe to do without knowing exactly where to insert these instructions ), which tells me in essence to do this:

mount -t ntfs-3g/dev/sdb8/media/AUDIO-ONE -o force

What do i do to do this? I am afraid to edit since i am new to Linux and not exactly a DOS whiz either. ..

Please, anyone, i need urgent help on this. Thanks / Andrew

Firstly, I suggest you buy ANOTHER drive and make a copy if the data is as 'critical'as you say.

mount -t ntfs-3g/dev/sdb8 /media/AUDIO-ONE -o force

Note the space. Sounds like you are mistreating your hardware. When you take the USB plug out of one system to then attach it to another, what steps do you take?

hard drives don't last forever, so get a new one. some are better than others. i stay clear away from the WD brand. actionparsnip likes to make the statement that people abuse their hardware, so take that with a grain of salt.

Can you help with this problem?
