what do you mean by "defrag my mp3 player"?
do you mean
1) the physical device you have?
2) the mp3 files on the player?
3) the files on an usb card or flash drive?
4) the mp3 player program that you have installed in ubuntu?

for 1) it's impossible

for 2) and 3), defragging is not needed. you only need to defrag files on hard drives, as fragmented files require the drive's head to move back and forth, thus increasing the amount of time to retrieve the data. when files are stored in electronic circuits (as is the case with usb cards and flash drives) there are no moving parts, so there's no hinderance in speed.

for 4) files in linux systems/ubuntu are way less fragmented than on windoze systems, so defragging isn't needed.

I mean defrag the files on the mp3 player, I want to format the thing, but the last time I did that to another mp3 player of mine, I was not able to use it again.

Well, what I decided to do since I cannot defrag my Mp3 player, I decided to once a month format it, then add my music back in.
