My data suddenly lost in my storage partition, i have win and Ubuntu. My pictures, my videos, but the folder-tree remains...

Asked by Safi

I have a dual Win7 and Ubuntu. Separate partitions, and a third one, for data. It was working, and i used ntfs tool, to fix the third partition in ubuntu. After that it worked, and i could see all my files. But today i started the Win, somewhy it needs activation, and dont like my legal coda (:S), and after that i saw, that my videos, pictures, and some other files have missing from my data partition, but the folder system is untouched. The system (by first blink) sees the partition almost empty. I gone back Ubuntu but i cant see them either. I dont know how this happened, and if this files are gone, or just hiding? Can somebody help me?

Thx

If your missing data are extremely important and you don't have a backup, then you should hire a data recovery expert. It will be expensive. But any change you make to the partition could render your data even more inaccessible or even partially or entirely destroy it (assuming it can even be recovered now).

Otherwise, try checking the partition for errors (and fixing them, if possible) in Windows:

Something is clearly wrong in that partition, so even if you have a backup, it's probably a good idea to make sure the partition isn't damaged before restoring the backup there.

Can you help with this problem?
