Itunes under wine is spotty -- every new version of itunes breaks. You will have to use a windows machine to do this, such as installing a virtual machine on your computer to run itunes, or dual booting.

Unfortunately, apple choose to use protocols that are non-standard, and thus make everyone's life really hard.

This is not much of an option. I just deleted windows on this unit, because Windows was crashing and well being Windows. My machine is finally stable!

Whilst it is not much of an option, it is the only option.. Apple don't release the specifications for their devices, so only apple knows how it works, and won't tell anyone. Some reverse engineering has to be done to figure it out. Devices that don't follow open specifications (eg iPad), will always have poor compatability with other systems.

You can also use online storage as a work around, but it will be very slow for transferring large files.

I really don't want to transfer any files. My new iPad has a larger hard drive than my PC. I just want to turn the thing on!

I tried to run virtualbox. I did not know that I need a copy of Windows for this to work. This computer had Windows XP installed on it when I bought it, but did not come with a copy. I really do not want to go buy Windows just to run a virtual copy. This is only to turn on my iPad.

I was unaware that apple do not allow the device to operate independantly of itunes. Bizzare.

You might be able to get it activated at the store where you bought it.

Actually, one last idea... You may still have the windows partitions, or a hidden partition with a windows recovery disk image on it.

Can you open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T), and give the output of :

sudo fdisk -l

?

Also, can you please tell us the make and model of your computer.

No, the dell utility is, AFAIK, a hardware checking tool, and end user licence shrink-wrap system (although it is a "hidden" parititon). I was looking for something called "dell restore", but it is not there.

You will need to ask dell for your windows disks. If you can prove your purchase, they should be able to give this to you. When you got your device, it should also have come with a windows CD key (sometimes called "product activation code", or "windows genuine advantage" code (you cant make this stuff up!)) , which you will need.

You may want to check through the stuff that came from dell again - -they usually send a small mountain of disks -- one of those might be called the "dell restore" disc, which you can use to reset the computer back to its original state, or you might be able to use it to install windows inside virtualbox.
