mp3 not recognized after install of ubuntu 10.4

Asked by Katherine Barger

I recently upgraded, then did fresh install of ubuntu 10.4 lucid. Now my mp3 player isn't recognized when I plug it in. I used to be able to plug it in, see it and download music to it, now it just doesn't seem to see it's there.

What MP3 player is it?

Can you plug it in, then provide the output from the following terminal commands (cut and paste)?

To open a terminal press CTRL+ALT+T

sudo lspci
sudo lsusb
mount

Sorry to be a pain, but I can't explicitly see the MP3 device in that listing. It might be the "Sunplus technology" device.

Can you unplug the device, if plugged in, the plug it back in and provide (again with the device plugged int)
$ sudo lsusb -v
$ sudo dmesg | tail -n 80

Other than the last 3 lines of that dmesg output, the device is not being seen whatsoever. There should be a line for each device plugged in that looks vaguely like:

 Port 1: 0000.0303 lowspeed power enable connect

But there are only two of these. One for your mouse and keyboard.

This does not appear to be a software issue, as far as i can see -- the device simply isn't registering as being on the USB system. It could be that there is some faulty hardware -- either the device or your USB ports themselves

A few thoughts
* Try different non-adjacent USB ports (if you have one on the front of your machine, try the ones in the back) -- Make sure you are not using any USB hubs or extension cables
* Double check the batteries in the device, if it takes removable cells.
* Try an alternate computer, to confirm the device is OK?

@mycae :

When you request lengthy result, you could ask user to copy/paste into http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and provide new link (someone forget this detail!). It makes thread more readable.
Best way to identify USB device is to run lsusb one time with device plugged, and one time unplugged (remember the device takes some time to be detected).

@Katherine

There are two protocols to communicate with a MP3 player: USB mass memory or Windows Embeded Device.
Which software did you used to exchange music between PC and MP3 player.

These are the results from lsusb, not plugged in and plugged in the front where I always have and pluged in the back diff. usb port
I t all looks the same to me. In all three ports I used it shows the battery light up on mp3 player like it is charging. The mp3 player doesn't use removable battery, you only charge it from with computer usb. I have always used limewire to get my music. The only thing that changed was installing 10.4 lucid, from ubuntu 8.

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 1bcf:0007 Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc. is the optical mouse.
Your device is not enumerated on USB bus, which looks more like a software issue.

1-Could you boot on a Ubuntu CD previous than 10.04.1 (e.g. http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ ) , choose "Try without install" and check if device is enumerated in USB bus (command lsusb).
2-Could you try on another USB port
3-Could you check on another computer.
4-What is the exact model of your MP3 player ?

I'm not very good with linux/ubuntu. When I clicked on the link I didn't see anywhere where I could "Try without install".
I thought when I plugged it in the back, I thought I was trying another usb port when I plugged it in the other one in the front and the one in the back.
I can't try another computer for a couple of days. Hospice is in the house with father-in-law.

1-Link is http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04.4-desktop-i386.iso . Burn the CD, boot on this (after setup of BIOS boot order. You will see a screen with "Install/Try without install". Choose "Try without install". Plug device in USB and run command "lsusb" to check if device is seen on USB bus.
4-I found nothing about such issue on Google.
Points (2) and (3) are most important ones, as we suspect an hardware issue. I advise you to check those point before doing point (1).

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Katherine Barger for more information if necessary.
