Unable to mount USB stick: "Unable to mount [name of stick] . Not authorised"

Asked by Richard Franklin

When I insert a memory stick into a USB slot I get the message "Unable to mount [name of stick] . Not authorised"
Tried changing name of stick in windows (on another PC, safely removed it), tried the various sudo commands listed elsewhere. No joy.
The sticks work perfectly on windows PC's. This is such a silly fault, I work continually with these sticks and if I can't fix it, that's the end of Ubuntu for me..... Hope someone out there can suggest a simple fix....

Thanks, I did what you suggested, and in the meantime (since I posted the question and saw your response) did a recovery boot, which in itself seemed to fix the situation. Though after the reboot there were a few permissions still not checked, so I checked them too.
Many thanks for the help.

in the top rigt corner of the screen you'll see a cog like icon, click on it and you'll see an options menu, one of them will say system settings
