Are you sure the machine's USB slots are working? Did you try a different USD slot?

Plug the USB thing, open a Terminal an type

lsusb -v

See if your device appears there and post the output.

You could try using the gparted live cd. Plug in the USB drive, the boot the gparted live cd. It should detect the flash drive.

Have you completely shut-down, inserted the flash drive and then turned the computer back on? It may "see" it that way.

I have the same problem-- am trying to get a flash drive to appear. I've been all over these forums, and most of the time cannot even understand the posted answers. Be that as it may, I just id that lsusb thing and got the following response:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 046d:c509 Logitech, Inc. Cordless Keyboard & Mouse
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:3c02 Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart 7350
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 413c:2003 Dell Computer Corp. Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 045e:0040 Microsoft Corp. Wheel Mouse Optical
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

I don't have a clue what most of this even means. Yes, I see I have a mouse, a keyboard and a printer. And they work. I already knew that. I have no idea what the rest means. In normal human English, there ought to be some reference to a USB port, but there isn't. SO: is the USB port on the front of my computer there or not? Is it working or not? Why, almost 30 years after I bought my first computer, am I messing around programming in normal functions, like I had to do with BASIC three decades ago? I gotta tell you people, this Ubuntu system is an insane step backward if the user has to code in simple, basic functions. Why you think this is superior to (God forbid) Microsoft is a mystery.

I just need to buy an Apple, I guess. But somebody needs to tell you Ubuntu users that the emperor has no clothes.

Can you help with this problem?
