Use your backups is by far the quickest and fastest and most reliable method. Otherwise you can use the waay less reliable method of foremost to read the device raw and maybe create files the app finds. It isn't reliable at all and recovered files may be damaged. You will need a partition mounted as writable to put the found files onto.

Devices need mounting to be read, you can read and write to them without mounting but it is in a different way. foremost can access and recovery files without the partition being mounted. Why do you not have backup if the data is worth all this effort? ZIP disks are like any disk and prone to mechanical failure. This would make all the data completely irretrievable without spending thousands of dollars in professional data retrieval. a cheap USB device is a great way to backup and is cheap.

well, actionparsnip. we definitely need to work on your english.
i think he's talking about transferring his old files off the iomega disks and onto something else.

the iomega zip drives were never reliable. once you hear the drive clicking, your files are screwed. seeing that you can only see some of the files, i'd say you have a faulty drive and it screwed up some of your files and only the iomega drive could read them back.

what i'd suggest is if you still have your old opsys installed, to retrieve the files that way and transfer them to a usb/thumb drive.

foremost is a program in ubuntu. i've never used it. raw processing means you look at the bits and bytes stored on the hard drive and you have to manually guess what makes up a file. you'd be retrieving all the bits and bytes that are retrievable, but what you get won't necessarily be files, or could be a bunch of files combined into one.

Being a 3 year old manager from england, with 2 white parents also originally from england. I'd say my english was pretty spot on. If you read the question, the user expressed the storage device is not showing all the data impllying it is faulty. Which you then echoed so I don't see where the language failed.

Zip disks are damn fast but unfortunately use moving parts and aren't very reliable at all

One way to copy partition is to use Gparted (you have to install it from Synaptic:System->Administration->Packet Management and search for "gparted").
If you reduce first partition on a USB key, you can copy paste partition from ZIP to USB key.
There are other ways to do that, as "dd" command at line command.
But I recommend you to unmount ZIP partition (and not ZIP¨disk) before doing anything.

Can you help with this problem?
