Damaged/Unmoutable DVD recover data from...

Asked by NOnameatall

My Back In Time backup DVD will not mount and is evidently damaged. i need to restore critical files due to a re-installation of U 10.04. Does anyone have experience with a data recovery program that will read the DVD without mounting and recover as much of the files as possible? Big Thanks for the help!

You can try using foremost on the unmounted DVD. I'd backup to a better medium than DVD as scratches and such can make them useless.

If you have appended data to the DVD multiple times chances are high that at least first view write sessions to the DVD are still intact.e mount

Using something like

mount /dev/dvd /mnt -o session=2
Will mount the DVD as it was after the second time you wrote to it - and allow you at least to recover the old state of your files.

A better idea might be to try a different DVD drive if you have access to a different computer: Sometimes one drive cannot mount a DVD another can.
