hd not being detected

Asked by 4ss3mbl3

Ubuntu(lucid) is not assinging label(sdb) to my external drive(toshiba 160g usb)

it was formatted in FAT32 but i remember wanting to save a file bigger than 4G
so i formatted the rest of the drive to ntfs(so it then had two fs) but i'm pretty sure that
it sitll mounted after i did that, no sure if that is the problem

in desperate need of help!! i need to acces this drive

this is the output of dmesg | tail 20

There are only Linux partitions here on a single disk. Sounds like the device isn't being detected. What OS did you form the partitions on the drive with?

Has the system been in a windows system? Do you use the safetly remove hardware option or do you simply rip the drive from the system?

yes it has been in a windows system before
i have xp on vbox(3.2.6) but i don't seem to be able to make it recognize the usb plugged in (yes i have guest additions installed)

i did a
modprobe usb_strorage
this is the result of dmesg afterwards

seems to have loaded right? but drive still not recognized

this is my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf output

The open source VBox doesnt have natuve usb support. The closed source one does.

When you remove the device from the system do you safetly remove it or do you simply unplug the device?

You should have a backup if the data is important.

You can try and use foremost to recover some of the data.

when it used to detect, yes i would safely remove it
but now since it doesn't detect, i have been just simply removing it :/

to do this i need the drive to at least be detected sdx
ex:

sudo ddrescue -r 3 /dev/sda /media/usbdrive/image /media/usbdrive/logfile

in this case i would be extracting file from sda(if) to /media/usbdrive/image(of)

but my drive doesn't have a label(sdx)

there has to be a way to solve this problem
thanks for trying to help me
if you find something please let me know
if i find a solution i definitely post it here
