Boot menu appears, but system won't boot from USB stick

Asked by AlanQ

USB device is Ativa 2GB flash memory.
Machine is Mini-ITX with VIA C3 processor.

Works with usb-creator after re-partitioning and re-formatting as per
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+question/55760

USB device inserted and BIOS changed so that first boot device is USB-HDD.

SYSLINUX loads.
Boot menu appears (Try without any change, Install, Check CD, etc.)

When I choose Try Without Change or Install, LED on USB stick flashes continuously but nothing else happens.

'Test Memory' does work.

I had the same problem, although I was loading from a cd. I selected the version with the driver help, and now it runs smoothly. Don't know why the computer needed remedial drivers [maybe it was in the dumb class :) ].

Thanks maloken

I've just tested the usb-stick on a more usual AMD-based machine and it works!

Your driver idea sounds plausible.
However, I have installed and re-installed several versions of Ubuntu to the hard disk (including 8.10) on the VIA mini-ITX machine and have not needed a driver.

And, the mini-ITX machine happily boots from the CD that was used to create the bootable USB stick.
So I'm guessing that the driver needed is specifically to allow the machine to boot from USB?

Not sure where to go from here...
