Hi, is this a new installation?

9.04 was not an LTS release and so it's support expired in October last year. As near as I can tell (I'm no expert) rd-default was a script in /etc/event.d/ that was involved in setting the run level. This configuration appears to have been deprecated as my 10.04 system does not have a file called /etc/event.d/rc-default or indeed the directory /etc/event.d.

A fault in this script may indicate a corrupted file (hardware error) or some other error in the script, or possibly a problem with the kernel itself. It's not clear what an exit status of 2 means however an investigate of that script may be enlightening.

My advice would be to:

1) Download 10.4 the LTS release or a later interim release (I recommend the LTS usually)
2) Check the MD5sum of the downloaded ISO.
3) Burn an installation CD at the slowest possible speed (and check it)
4) Install or at least try the LiveCD to see if will run.
