Cannot see update-notifier icon since upgrade to Dapper
I have a user created in Breezy. I have never been able to see the update-notifier icon since I upgraded to Dapper (I upgraded manually via apt-get dist-upgrade).

edit sources.list file and replace records from breezy to dapper, then
apt-get update
apt-get -u upgrade
apt-get -u dist-upgrade

I am at Dapper, but it looks like my update-notifier does not do the auto checking. I believe if I create a new user the update-notifier would do that for THAT user. But not on this user created from Breezy. Is there something that was buggy in the upgrade in the gconf-editor configurations?

Is your current user in the admin group? You can check using the tool in system-

See related bug - nobody seems to be able to figure this out for some reason...
Dean: I AM in the admin AND adm group - could that be why?

no, it's normal to be in both. The bug comments seem to indicate that there's a setting in a hidden file in your home directory - I can't find anything relevant though.
Do you have a directory called .update-notifier in your home directory?

Yup, there is. it has this file:
-rw-r--r-- 1 kenc kenc 38 2006-06-10 10:37 hooks_seen
and contents looks like:
firefox-
BTW, I've upgraded to Edgy Knot 3 in hopes that this will fix it... but not yet!
Can you help with this problem?
