Update manager 'Failed to Download Repository'

Asked by Jbun

I have the same problem!

Karmic Koala Beta, Kernel Linux 2.6.31-11-generic

Trying upgrade Karmic Koala Beta, last 2 mornings I have an error message (pasted below). It says to check internet connection but I have 2 alternate web connections and can surf so don't think it is the internet connection. At the last successful upgrade I was asked something about 'Grub' - I choose to view differences side by side...it completed successfully and the PC was working fine but since then I have not been able to successfully update. Error message is:

W:Failed to fetch http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/main/source/Sources.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch
, W:Failed to fetch http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic/universe/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Hash Sum mismatch
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

Hey

If anyone else comes across this, see what speed you are getting on your web connection. After the problem reoccurred, I switched from my 3G and onto a fast wifi and it worked ok. For smaller updates (14mb or so) it seems fine, but I suspect (and this is based purely on my experience) that on the larger ones (say 150mb), with a slower connection there may be a time out of sorts. Please don't take as gospel but something to consider.

Cheers
