I need some kind of time based system restore please...!

Asked by summerr86

Hi...i really really need some kind of system restore. I got a new computer a year ago and haven't used it because i put ubuntu on it and I never quite understood it. I did work fine and i was able to have flash on it and I think i tried to install a newer version and it didn't work. Instead, the flash didn't work anymore. I stopped using that computer and started using it again just to find out that now my cd rom is apparantly not installed and i can't install it. Is there ANY way to do a system restore so i can have my cd rom working again? Please...i'm still a newbie and any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've absolutely tried everything to get my cd rom or just flash to work and no success. I just need to go back to a date when I knew everything worked.

What version of ubuntu are you running?
Is there anything important on that comp ? if you just started using it again how about a fresh install of a current release?

Ubuntu 8.40. I don't really care about saving anything at this point. I do think i've tried just about everything and it gets me so close and i reach a dead end. I did try to install it again and another version but it won't work. I am pretty sure i've messed settings up because i don't know much about computers. I tried to reset the bios but it returned a message "UNDI initialize failed no media detected".

Get a new ubuntu CD : http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
When your asked where to install , choose to erase everything first and use the whole drive (assuming that you only have one drive).

And get a "fresh" start.
If you cannot start from CD you need to enter BIOS and change your "start/boot order".
Or maybe you have an boot menu that can be accessed by pressing F12

I have a new windows cd coming soon so i will try it then. I'm not even sure about the order the bios are supposed to be in. It's all foreign to me but i'm learning more since i've had to do so much stuff lately. Thanks for you help.

Resetting your bios will not get you the ability to put an unrecognized devices as first boot device... are you sure your cd rom is not listed...? and if is listed have you tried to press the + and - keyboard keys to chanche boot priority... ?

I actually just found out yesterday that it was my battery. It was causing my cd rom to not show up and as soon as i replaced it, it worked fine. No probs at all and now i'm kinda happy with having ubuntu now that i have my windows cd.
