how do i found which version of ubuntu i have, when i try to upgrade i get an error stating can't detect what version i'm using
After my first question asking about my system being out dated there was a similar question ask with the same errors and I notice that I need to update my version of ubuntu, when I use the update manager to upgrade to the new version I get an error message
Can't guess meta-package
Your system does not contain a ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, xubuntu-desktop or edubuntu-desktop package and it was not possible to detect which version of Ubuntu you are running.
Please install one of the packages above first using synaptic or apt-get before proceeding.
I bought this computer in 2007 from Walmart which came with a CD everex. Please help.

2nd error before closing the update manager
Could not calculate the upgrade
A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/
Previously before I had no problem using the update manager

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications-
lsb_release -rdc
copy and paste result here.
Then still using terminal please try...
-------
Tip: right click with mouse on the terminal title caption and select the item "Always on Top" doing this you will force the terminal window to stay on top of the other windows and you will find very easy to copy single row from this web page into the terminal...

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )
sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get -f install

Edit your source list with
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
and replace archive.ubuntu.com with old-releases.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Now see in update manager if new version is available for upgrade. If not run
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
If nothing of above help replace your sources list with this one http://
Don't include medibuntu repos, because you will add them later with https:/

Do you have a fast internet connection? you can go to ubuntu.com and download the latest .iso.(btw, iso are just a image of a cd that you can burn onto a cd or mount, the advantage of mounting is that you don't have to burn the cd) this is the latest(9.04 http://
Once it downloads, you can go back to the terminal (Applications → Accessories → Terminal) and type:
sudo apt-get install gmountiso
Then type your password, then hit enter. This will install a program to mount the .iso that you just downloaded... once mounted it should ask you if you wan to update:)
Ask away. Hope this helps,
David

Don't know about the firsh part of your question, chad. Did you have
any other program like synaptics or any other pakaging applicayion
open?
The problem was that only one 'pkg manager' can be actice at a time,
so that they don't step on each others toes. If this application we're
to crash tho, it leaves behind a 'lock' file. Witch tells the next pkg
program "I'm busy". Ths solution is easyer than is seems :)
Terminal:
Sudo rm /var/lib/apt/list
[ Then enter password ]
Sudo apt-get update
sudo update-manager -d
See how that works and let me know, don't get frustrated tho, it will
come with time.
