Update information is outdated? 404 error

Description: Ubuntu 9.04

Linux system76-pc 2.6.28-15-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 18 19:25:34 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Today after installing some updates, I received a notification that my update information was outdated. That seemed odd since I just applied some updates. So I clicked on it like it asked, and here's what it tells me:

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

The errors are all '404 Not Found' errors. When I go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources, I see all of these are listed under '3rd party sources'.

Now what really perplexes me is that this a laptop purchased from System76 with Ubuntu pre-installed. I did not add any of these repositories and in fact I don't remember ever adding anything to the sources list. So what happened? Have these always been in my sources and just suddenly stopped working, or did they somehow just get added recently?

I tried your links and they don´t work.If you didn´t touch anything maybe it is just temporary problem with servers. But maybe somebody else know better.

I thought the same thing, so I waited all day and it's still not working. Also, you can browse to:

http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty-security/main/binary-amd64/

(Just remove the -i386 from jaunty-security) and it works. So it's a little perplexing why my sources list has it written the wrong way.

Stuff does just go wrong sometimes. It sounds like you just need to edit your sources.list - don't forget to sudo it! lol

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Perhaps, but the basic issues still have not been addressed:

1.) Are these lines I need? I never added them, but they are listed under 3rd party repositories. I fail to understand how 'security.ubuntu.com' is 3rd party.
2.) If these are lines that are necessary, why aren't other users experiencing the same problem, or are they?

Things don't just 'sometimes go wrong'. Things don't just magically change. Something caused this to happen, and as such this may not be *the* problem, but rather a symptom of a larger problem.

Try this to rebuild everything.

PS. You don´t have to choose a server from your country.

My sources.list seems very very short. I don't know how this happened but i seem to have all codecs and multimedia sorted which used to make it quite a long list. Anyway, here's mine

deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty main restricted
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates main restricted
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty universe
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates universe
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty multiverse
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-updates multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu jaunty partner
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-security main restricted
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-security universe
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-proposed restricted main multiverse universe
deb http://ubuntu-archive.datahop.it/ubuntu/ jaunty-security multiverse
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt jaunty main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope"

It's all interspersed with comment-out lines whereas all the uncommented stuff used to be collected together at the end as far as i remember. Seems to be quite a bit of change going on at the moment.

I hope this helps! Rob's link looks pretty good to me. I was wondering about just deleting (or better still renaming) the sources.list file to force Ubuntu to make a new one. This sort of thing often works but i am not sure it would wok for the sources.list.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

No. They try to add 32bit on amd_64, due to config from pre-installation.
>Just remove the -i386 from jaunty-security
That was a good idea.

There is also one third party line with 'Hardy'.
In case you'd like to create a clean sources.list
Make sure no update app is running, e.g. Synaptic.
Open the file:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

###Example of clean sources list

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)
