1) Yes, this server has no Gutsy.

You could try changing the server. Synaptic Package Manager>Settings>Repositories>(Top tab) Ubuntu Servers> Download from>(Either) Main Server (Or) Other

2) Why install Gutsy? 7.10 =2007 October. The current release is 9.04=2009 April. Soon it will be 9.10=2009 October

hi
the system is currently upgrading to 80.4
please is there a way to upgrade straight to the latest version without having to go through all the other versions from 7.04 which i installed.

I don´t think you can skip version. So if you want to upgrade from Hardy it will look like this Hardy>Intrepid>Jaunty. If you have separate home partition you can install Jaunty without loosing your data/files.

You can only upgrade from one version to the next. You would be better and quicker to to a new, clean install. If, as you say, you have just installed Gutsy you have nothing to lose.

HI :)

Gutsy is 7.10 and should allow you to upgrade to Hardy Heron, which is 8.04. Hardy is the latest LTS release so it might be worth sticking with that as it gets all the bug-fixes and everything before the other versions. LTS stands for Long Term Support which is due to last until 2011. The next LTS release isn't due out until 2010, some say it will be out in June making it version 10.06 which hasn't happened since Dapper Drake 6.06 (which was the previous LTS btw)

From 8.04 you can upgrade straight to 9.04 or if you wait a few months (until October) then you could upgrade straight to 9.10. Note that many people (particularly corporate or other business users) stick with the LTS release specifically to avoid these constant upgrades and issues about support running out after only 18months ;)

Hopefully something in there helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
