I suggest you to upgrade your Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 using the alternate 9.04 install cd.

You don't strictly need to make a cd to upgrade from the alternate iso image...

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading#Upgrading%20Using%20the%20Alternate%20CD/DVD

I suggest you to download a .torrent of the iso file, in this mode you can stop the download and resume it and you have a final iso checksum.

http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso.torrent

or if you have a 64 bit release

http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-alternate-amd64.iso.torrent

Hope this helps

I think the easy way to upgrade your system with the Ubuntu desktop standard install cd is to reinstall Ubuntu, using that cd.

Please save your home directory files and settings and installed packages list.

I still think the better way if you don't want to reinstall your packages and to keep your settings is to use the Ubuntu alternate iso cd.

Hope this helps
