What can be done about these failed messages?

There are the wrong url. Which kind of architectur do you want to get? There are for 32 bit this files:
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.bz2
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/universe/binary-i386/Packages.bz2

I think, this are the sources you want to get. Please change the urls.
