software updater gives an error message and stops

Asked by Grant MacPherson

Computer - Surface Pro 7

grant@grant-Surface-Pro-7:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS

The system has been working normally for over 2 years. As of June this year the following error message occurs when running the 'software updater'
‘Failed to download package files

The internet is working normally (updater shows available updates including kernel updates).

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org. Have you fiddled with any apt configuration files, or done anything that would fiddle with them like adding PPAs, installing software from third-party sources, etc.?

Thank you for your help.

December 2021 I did install zuluCrypt version 6.0 from their website.
In March 2020 installed FAudio and Wine.
Apologies for my slow response as I look at my notes and try to find
anything that may help.
Install on the Surface Pro was a challenge but the system has been
trouble free except in November last there was an issue with apt
(https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/issues/625) and I made
the changes discussed there which including adding ppa:tj/bugfixes.

For diagnostic purposes please provide the output that you receive for the following commands (to be executed in a terminal window):

There is no error shown, everything seems to be in a sane status.
What do you now get for the command

sudo apt full-upgrade

?

No need for the full output.

Obviously the repository pkg.surfacelinux.com is the culprit.
It's a foreign source, so you should look there for a solution.

https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Known-Issues-and-FAQ#apt-update-fails-on-ubuntudebian-based-distributions-with-error-401-unauthorized should help.
see also https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/issues/625
and https://launchpad.net/~gpxbv/+archive/ubuntu/apt-urlfix

You probably have to replace PPA:tj/bugfixes by PPA:gpxbv/apt-urlfix
