How to upgrade ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10?

Asked by STEVE G

Having had no luck with the normal means of upgrading 8.04.1 to 8.10, I have downloaded 8.10 from a nearby Ubuntu site. I have a Dell computer with Ubuntu as the only OS. I am simply trying to upgrade.

Now I see the 8.10 files but I see no way to install them. I have to do a search to find them as the download offered no choices of placement. The "install" button on top of the search screen does nothing.

Please tell me how to install 8.10 over 8.04.

If the upgrade doesn't work, you have to boot your pc with the Ubuntu cd you had burned from the ISO image downloaded from the mirror.
Then you have to start the setup process from the live distro and then, using manual partitioning, format the root partition and leave the /home partition untouched and mapping its mount point to /home, so you can keep you're profile without big problems.
If you have only a partition you have to copy your personal data before reinstalling.

A note: this way you're not upgrading, you're installing a new operating system over 8.04.

If you want to upgrade to 9.04 you'll have to upgrade to 8.10 first.

See the page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntrepidUpgrades on how to upgrade to 8.10.
