Every release has some improvements. Most/Some of the packages/software has newer versions
You can upgrade without loosing your data.

there is a forum thread with the title: "List of New Features in Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex""

I guess, you're using 8.04. So you can do an upgrade. Do the following:

1: System > Administration > Software Sources
2: Tab Updates
3: Regarding Release Upgrade: choose Normal releases

If you open the Update Manager, you can see a line called "New distribution release 8.10 is available". So you can start the upgrade.

Regarding applications: take care, some applications are not supported in 8.10. As an example kdiff3 is not included - you have to use compare.

Hope it helps.
