So it can't download anything... Did you check that you're online and without a firewall? Also did you have problems doing updates before? what's the output of "sudo apt-get update" and what's your /etc/apt/sources.list file?

Ok, so it seems the problem is that Ubuntu feisty (i.e. 7.04) is not a long-term support version and is not on the repositories anymore. Just take a quick look at http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/ and see for yourself. If I remember correctly, the upgrade to a new version is always part of the old version's repository.

You _could_ just fix your sources.list to a newer version (replace feisty with the appropriate version), and run "apt-get update" and then "apt-get dist-upgrade", however chances are good that you'll completely screw your system (tried it once and it became a mess).

Other tries would be just for the sake of it to try the "check for new distro" button on your favourite graphical package manager, to look for the old updater itself on the web, or to try to find an old repository that still carries feisty (and change your sources.list accordingly).

However, frankly by far the easiest is to 1) backup you home directory 2) get the newest ubuntu CD 3) install the newest ubuntu and 4) copy your home directory back. I did that a few times and it actually kept most of my settings. Step 4) may be unnecessary if you just keep your home directory on the HD and don't format the home partition (btw. its always good to keep /home, root ("/") and /boot on separate partitions for the reason that you don't want to screw your home directory if the rest of system gets fried in some mishap), but in any case still do 1) .

As a painful lesson, always upgrade to the newest version (maybe wait a few weeks for the last bug fixes) or at least stick to a current LTS version, if you're upgrade-lazy. Usually upgrading to a new version is pretty pain-free (just a click of a button).

What about to try a distribution upgrade using the xUbuntu 7.10 alternate install cd...

Here an easy way to find all the online official Ubuntu torrents images...

http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/

Then you can try some similar to this:

Hope this helps

Looks worthwhile giving it a try!
Just remove the "#" and put the extra "old" where you have the updates and backup your old sources.list. Then try apt-get update, then apt-get upgrade and then try to upgrade to the newer version. let me know if you need help.
Here's the sources.list that I'd try:

ok... so you're a little step further...
actually in the sources.list also un-comment the lines

deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted

and try again "apt-get update" and then "apt-get upgrade" (or maybe also "apt-get dist-upgrade"), and then try again to upgrade to 7.10. Your problem is right now that somehow your upgrade tool still looks for http://us.archive.ubuntu.com than http://old-releases.ubuntu.com for the debian-installer packages. So there's some chance that that gets fixed by just upgrading your 7.04 with the old-releases mirror.
If it doesn't work, try to do you upgrade in the command line (forgot how it works though).
Maybe also try "apt-get install debian-installer" and then try again the upgrade to 7.10 that has a good chance of fixing it.

Also, maybe can you have a look whether the upgrade tool adds some lines (or changes) your sources.list?

your last message came while I was typing ;) but it confirms what I thought is the problem

in addition to what I wrote, you can also try to look inside that file /tmp/tmp-1yX90/gutsy.tar.gz for something that contains that link to http://us.archive.ubuntu.com and fix that to http://old-releases.ubuntu.com . If there's too much in the gutsy.tar.gz, then untar it (or look where ubuntu has untar'd it for you when you tried the upgrade) and then use "grep http://us.archive.ubuntu.com" in the directory where you untar'd it. That will show you which file it is in.

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #15

ok, again messages across ;)
but anyway, try un-commenting those lines in the very top of your sources.list, and the first try what I suggested and if those things don't work, you can still try messing with your /tmp/tmp-1yX90/gutsy.tar.gz

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #16

i need to find the /tmp/tmp-1yX90/gutsy.tar.gz??

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #18

I just saw it in the output of your "do-release-upgrade", so I suspect that this file contains maybe that outdated link to the us.archive.ubuntu.com, rather than old-releases.ubuntu.com. You should have the "/tmp/tmp-1yX90/gutsy.tar.gz" while when you're doing the "do-release-upgrade", since it shows that it downloaded it.

Actually with your most recent sources.list, do the apt-get update and apt-get upgrade still produce error messages? and do "apt-get install debian-installer" and "apt-get install --reinstall update-manager" (or also "apt-get install --reinstall update-manager-core") work?

Matthew Lye (matthew.lye) said : #19

It might be worth doing a clean install of 8.04 to bring you up to a supported version and ask the install to import your home from 7.04.

The problem then is you still need to reinstall your applications from the repositories.

Hmmm... so it's a puzzle to me as to why apt-get update still complains about not finding the us.archive.ubuntu.com, even though there's nothing like that in your /etc/apt/sources.list.
So there are three things I can think of:
1) do you have a file /etc/apt/sources.list.distUpgrade ? And what's the contents of it (maybe fix it to point to the right repository)?
2) did you try "apt-get upgrade" and "apt-get install debian-installer" ?

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #28

is there other way to make my ubuntu 7.04 to 8.04 direct?

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #29

sure, that's what I told you in the first place:
1) backup your home directory (easiest is on an external HD)
2) download the CD (either 8.04 or the newest version, which is 8.10, but that's not LTS)
3) make a new installation on your computer (that over-writes the old one)
4) In case your home directory got screwed restore it form your backup.
Notes: a) you will need to install the packages and all software that you have now again
b) if you choose not to format the partition in which you have your home direcotry, then you may get lucky and maybe not need to do 4).

another hack that you can try is to take the sources.list that you had in the first place, and replace "feisty" with "gutsy" every where and do first "apt-get update" and then "apt-get dist-upgrade". That has some chance of working and some chance of failing (i.e. it may screw your system), but before you install 8.04 from CD anyway, you can give it a try.

it's your choice

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #30

i just download the latest 8.10 and i will burn it? what you think?

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #31

actually wrong press need more answer

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #32

Sure. That's the thing to do.

Then don't forget to copy all your stuff from your home directory onto an external HD or somewhere safe. (you can use the command "rsync -auv /home/* [the directory of your backup disk].

I personally would (after burgnin the CD and backing up) try the hack with changing your sources.list, just to give it a try...

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #33

I've been fighting with this same problem here, and found this thread.
I have a system with no CD or floppy (I have an external CD, but the stupid system won't boot from it...), otherwise I would just backup /home and install 8.04 or 8.10 from CD.

The problem seems to be that something in update manager is replacing the file:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list (no typo - that is the filename...)
with one that has hardcoded the us.archive.ubuntu.com repo.

I think I'll next try the trick mentioned here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeProblems
and add a hosts file entry like:
91.189.88.35 us.archive.ubuntu.com
# 91.189.88.35 is old-releases.ubuntu.com

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #34

Ah, OK, then you can just change this file accordingly.
you can do the fixes first to your /etc/apt/sources.list (archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases.ubuntu.com as in the example sources.list above) and then do the same kind of changes to the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list . If you dont know which changes to do, just copy your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list here.

I guess, that may actually be a really good fix. Can you try that too, Pinejoker?

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #35

I already tried editing it - The update manager is replacing that file with it's own copy.

Looking in the tmp dir created by the update manager I find the following file:
prerequists-sources.list

containing:

# sources.list fragment for pre-requists (one with countrymirror, one fallback)
deb http://${countrymirror}archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer
#deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer
# below is just for testing
#deb http://archive.dogfood.launchpad.net/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer

So that is what it is using - I haven't dug through the python code to see where it is getting it, but I do not think it is local - I think it is downloading it.

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #36

So I would have changed it to:
deb http://old-release.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer
but if it changes it back whenever you do the do-dist-upgrade, that sucks. Google says that archive comes from .../gutsy/main/dist-upgrader-all/current/gutsy.tar.gz. Maybe you can try to change the permissions of the modified /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list to write-protected, and hope that the updater a) doesn't quit on the error message and b) doesn't force-delete it

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #37

I meant deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #38

chmod 0600 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list
results in:

---
Could not initialize the package information

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Opening /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list - ifstream::ifstream (13 Permission denied), E:The list of sources could not be read.'
---

yeah - that sucks - it downloads the file with the wrong URL for the repo.

Well - my backup is done, so back to the other hack - add a hosts entry

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #39

duh - 0600 allows no one but root to read it
tried 0444 and it got replaced anyway
so on to the hosts file hack

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #40

that didn't work either, must be some sort of apache vhosts thing on the server, because even with the hosts file hack causing us.archive.ubuntu.com to resolve to 91.189.88.35 (old-releases.ubuntu.com) it still fails. used wget to confirm.

bah - an old bug, and annoying.

I guess I can dig through the python code in the tmp dir and see if I can find what to call to start the upgrade process so that it does not re-download everything. Then it can use the fixed file.

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #41

hang on, but if it replaces it, why didn't it replace it with new permissions (i.e. why did it keep the 0600 that it apparently complains about in the error message)?

Obviously, a really dirty hack that you can do is to write a script that loops through replacing that naughty file permanently with the fixed copy and nice it to a low priority (if you get fancy, check for whether it got changed before replacing) - or just do that by hand in a second terminal ;)

I'm slightly worried that if you map your archive.ubuntu.com to the ip of old-releases.ubuntu.com, it's also going to search for gutsy there.
Does it make the sources.list for the new distro based on the one one (in which case you could try to put duplicate copies to a different mirror there) or does it have it on the repository (in which case you can get lucky if the new one points to archive.ubuntu, but you map [country mirror].archive.ubuntu)?

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #42

Hm, out messages must have crossed ;)

Anyway, rather than digging through python code, I'd rather replace that prerequisite-sources file a zillion times with a "good" copy, and hope it hits the right time but that's a matter of taste ;)

curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #43

you are correct - it could not find the gutsy repo at old-releases...

It is trying to get gutsy from old-releases

tried it without the hosts entry also - still fails trying to get gutsy from old-releases...

so just changing that file is not enough

a hack mentioned in a thread on the ubuntu forums mentioned just replacing all "feisty" with "gusty" in the original sources.list and doing an update, but I suspect that may not do a very clean upgrade...

The update-manager in feisty needs to be fixed. not gonna hold my breath for that...

Time to go find a working IDE CDROM drive to plug into this old box, and just install a nice new version on the second hard drive... (hmmm... maybe 9.04 beta even?)
Then spend hours adding all the packages again - moan

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #44

did you try to put in your sources.list both the old-releases and the archive.u... (all with feisty)?
Obviously it will give errors that it can't get gusty from old releases and feisty from archive, but it will find both of them.

I did that replacing the sources.list to a new release a long time ago - and it was a mess

Best curmudgeon (mfbwanm02) said : #45

well - after some more futzing around it seems I have it working - thanks for all your help!

long story short:

I put old-releases/feisty and archive/gutsy in sources.list
  (and old-releases in /tmp/<blah>/prerequists-sources.list)
and it still failed, but an "apt-get update" gave me the error:
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
E: Error occurred while processing teg (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_gutsy_universe_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

so - I commented out the gutsy universe line in sources.list and apt-get update succeeded.
so back to dist-upgrade.py and I am now sitting at "Do you want to start the upgrade".

here are the contents of /tmp/tmp-1OrXO/prerequists-sources.list :

here are the contents of /tmp/tmp-1OrXO/prerequists-sources.list :
---
# sources.list fragment for pre-requists (one with countrymirror, one fallback)
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer
#deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer
# below is just for testing
#deb http://archive.dogfood.launchpad.net/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer

about this what is tmp/tmp-1OrXO/prerequists-sources.list : how to open this source??

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #47

Could not save the file /home/family/tmp/tmp-1XO…rerequisites-sources.list.

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #48

curmudgeon: I actually thought about putting two copies of feisty in the sources.list ... But anyway, did you get it working?

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #49

Pinejoker: You couldn't save it? Maybe it's write-protected. How about change its permissions ("chmod 0666 prerequists-sources.list")? But anyway, as curmudgeon said, this one apparently gets copied automatically to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/prerequists-sources.list and this cause the error message.

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #50

Thanks curmudgeon, that solved my question.

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #51

thanks to curmudgeon and jetbundle they are so very nice people ^_^..v. GO GO GO UBUNTU weeeeeeeeeeeeee

thanks again.. now i have Ubuntu 8.10 at last hehehe

jetbundle (mbrane) said : #52

Sounds great :)
Since you got it working, can you try to summarize the steps that you did kind-of as a bug fix? I guess there are other people out there who might have the same problems (or will have problems in the future if they forget to upgrade before their version becomes unsupported. For that purpose I put a link to this question in the ubuntu community documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes

Pinejoker (esijeffrey) said : #53

Okay sure..

Hi there,
I'm having the same problem... maybe it is solved (for me)

I must warn you that this is not the "better solution", but, it worked for me...

What I've done in short :

>> modify /etc/apt/sources.list :
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty-backports main restricted universe multiverse

>> to make sure the system is "up to date" in feisty
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

>> modify the python script that fetch /tmp/tmp??????/gutsy.tar.gz. This script is in :
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/UpdateManager/Core/DistUpgradeFetcherCore.py

If you can't find it, just lauch a 'do-release-upgrade' and cancel it (CTRL+C) at the beginning, an error with the full path of the script will appear.

#near line 28, add:
import time

# near the line 101-102, just after "tar.close()", add
print "----- IT IS TIME NOW !-----"
time.sleep(60)

# Note that you can adjust the time (60) by the value in seconds of your choice...

Theses lines should be like :
          tar.close()
          # Wait about 1 minute (time to modify update script)
print "----- IT IS TIME NOW !-----"
          time.sleep(60)
          return True

# Note that you must keep the text idented

>> Save and exit
>> Now prepare 2 terms : the first to lauch the "do-release-upgrade", the second to modify the file :
/tmp/tmp******/prerequists-sources.list

>> if you're ready, launch : " sudo do-release-upgrade ", wait for the text ----- IT IS TIME NOW !----- to appear, then go modify the script on the second term :

Replace the line :
deb http://${countrymirror}archives.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer

By :
deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer

Save and exit

>> Go back to the first term to see what's going on...

>> At the question : "Do you want to modify you sources.list ?"... return to the second term, and modify the file /etc/atp/sources.list like the original one :

Once done, you can reverse the modifications made on the python script

Hope it'll help someone, please, leave a message if you have some comments on it, or maybe another cleaner method !

The update overwrite this file, so nothing to be done...

Hello. It's been two years, and Dapper server just went to being unsupported at the beginning of June. I had some success using tried the method detailed by Vin'c above, but going from Dapper to Hardy. I should then be able to go from Hardy to Lucid without much trouble.

I used the instructions above, but with these differences:
Modified /etc/apt/sources.list and changed things from "us.archive" to "old-releases". Everything still said dapper by it.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
(Reboot if you've updated the kernel in that above step)
Modified /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/UpdateManagerCore/DistUpgradeFetcherCore.py
-- Put "import time" on line 31
-- Put " time.sleep(300)" around line 107 (with a print statement above it like Vin'c describes)
Ran sudo do-release-upgrade
When the script sleeps, you have just 300 seconds to do the next step:
-- Modified /tmp/tmpXXXXXX/prerequists-sources.list and prerequists-sources.dapper.list and changed them to "old-releases" as well. (I'm not sure if I needed to do both or not. I left prerequists-sources.dapper-ports.list alone though.)

I had to wait for a bit for the first terminal (the one actually running do-release-upgrade) to make it to the question "Do you want to modify the sources list?" (Make sure you don't press enter along the way or it skips that question by assuming a "no".) It will say: "WARNING: Failed to read mirror file."

Go fix /etc/apt/sources.list back to the way it used to be now. With "us.archive" instead of "old-releases" (except for the security lines, that should just be "security.ubuntu.com". Return to the update and say Yes. The updater will modify /etc/apt/sources.list and replace all the dapper entries with hardy entries and continue updating using the servers.
