Update Manager error on Ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Geneva

When the Update Manager runs on my Ubuntu 8.04 I get the following error message:

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://repoubuntusoftware.info/dists/harty/all/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

What is this? How can I fix it?

Hi,

I'm assuming it should be "hardy" and not "harty". Try changing the spelling and re-running.

Andy

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

finde the word harty and replace with hardy (Hardy is the codename of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy heron)

retry to run System→Administration→ Update Manager, press the "Verify" button and update your system.

Hope this helps

I am now getting this error message:

"Failed to fetch
http://repoubuntusoftware.info/dists/hardy/all/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404
Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones
used instead."

I changed the spelling from "harty" to "hardy" as you asked. And the
spelling in the error message has now changed.

HELP!

Please open the menu System → Administration → Software Sources and using the

"Download from: " listbox please select a different server.

Close and confirm repository index reload...

Then consider to upgrade your Ubuntu 7.10 release to 8.04, Ubuntu 7.10 is near to the end of support

Hope this helps
