how to upgrade 6.06lts to 8,10

Asked by MarcSurf

I'm a newbie to Linux & Ubuntu, so I apologize if this appears stupid. Have Ubuntu desktop v6.06lts installed and running fine. Would like to know how to upgrade to v8.10. (I have 8.10 on a cd and ready to go)?
Thanks,
Marc

A good way, is to use the Ubuntu CD, and install it WITHOUT format the /
so it delete all System folders, but leave /home (and all your data) untouched.

On the install select manual partition, and select all Linux partitions, but DONT click on Format.
i hope you understand, if not post again...

Thanks for your reply. However I'm not 100% sure of what you are saying.
Let me explain how my system is setup. I'm running a workstation that has GRUB at startup after Bios has loaded. This then lets me choose to boot either Windows XP or Ubuntu. Are you saying that after I select Ubuntu that I let 6.06lts load and then insert the cd with v8.10 or do I try to boot from the cd with v8.10?

Boot with Ubuntu 8.10 CD, and run " Check CD for defects "

if its OK, then
Boot with Ubuntu 8.10 CD, and run " Install Ubuntu "

At Partition Step on the Ubuntu installation (you will be noticed with "Scanning partitions" or something like this),
select "Manual Patition"
comes up a window with all partitions on HD, DONT touch Windows partitions (NTFS or FAT32),
select " EXT3 ", click on "modify", set it to :
" use like EXT3 trassactional blahblahblah "

Mount point select :
/

Format :
DONT SELECT (!!!)

select " Swap ", click on "modify", set it to :
" use like Swap space "

Mount point select :
N/A

Format:
yes or not, doesn't matter

So it is used like a EXT3 / without format.
finish the installation, and you have done...
