Unable to install/upgrade/remove programs in Ubuntu

Asked by PatrickMc

Hey guys, I would like to install Ushare so that I can stream media from Ubuntu to my 360, however, every time I try to install it (or anything), it tells me that it can't upgrade a certain package, "hydrogen drumkits". It won't let me uncheck this program in Synaptic, and when I try to uninstall it it says that I should reinstall it before I uninstall it. When I try to reinstall it, it says it can't. So basically it won't let me install/upgrade/uninstall anything until I fix/get rid of this hydrogen-drumkits, and it won't let me do that.

I'm pretty Ubuntu-retarded so maybe there is a simple method to fix this. If anyone could help me out it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get purge hydrogen-drumkits

then

sudo apt-get install ushare

ushare is great by the way, i use it every day with my 360. Now if only xbox360 will support mkv and drop the 4gig file limit then we'll be all set.

Sorry, I lied, when I tried "sudo apt-get install ushare" I get:
"Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package ushare is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package ushare has no installation candidate"

??

I still get the "invaild operation purge" when I try to remove hydrogen-drumkits in the terminal though.

Try 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' and then 'sudo apt-get -f install'. Those commands try to fix broken package dependencies.

Ok guys, so a bit of an update...

I have removed hydrogen-drumkits (thanks to Alpo Turunen), and apparently installed Ushare, however ushare seems to be missing a file as it isn't working properly.

Furthermore, I found out today that I'm running version 7.04 of Ubuntu, and through a lot of web searching I've found that most things (including ushare) require 7.10 to stream with a 360. I was told not to update my ubuntu by the guy who set it up for me because I have both Windows and Ubuntu on this hard drive and apparently it will screw up Windows if I do (I'm not sure why or how, but I did update once and it caused serious problems with both Ubuntu and Windows, so it is true). Windows is really buggy for me and I much much rather Ubuntu, hence me trying to find a way to stream through Ubuntu and just stay away from Windows all together haha.

Is there any known way of streaming to a 360 with 7.04 or am I screwed?

Thanks so much to all of you guys for helping, I really appreciate it!

How much Hard-drive space do you have free? If you have 7Gb completely free then maybe we could add in Ubuntu 8.10 as the third OS in a multi-boot and the extra couple of Gigs give enough space to really give it all the extra packages to see if it can work. Things have moved on a lot from 7.10 and may have corrected whatever the problem was on your machine.

The advantage of doing it this way rather than an upgrade route is that if it doesn't work then its easy to get rid of it.

Contact me or post as another question about triple-booting if you're interested and up-for-it. I think it's worth keeping a Windows going because some games and stuff need Windows

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
