Hi,
This is because a different process is already using aptitude or apt-get to update the package cache or download something.
Do you have synaptic or some other graphical package manager open as well?
If so, you will need to close them down before using apt-get on the command line.
If you cannot find the process that is using apt-get, then I suggest rebooting and trying again.
Regards,
Mark

Hi,
Your internet connection does not seem to be working.
Can you please connect your pc to your router using a LAN cable, reboot (switch off and then on again) the router, then reboot your pc and then retest your Internet connection?
Regards,
Mark

Hi,
I suggest booting from the Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD and testing your wired connection there (using the LAN/ethernet cable). If it does not work in the LiveCD session, then there is a problem with your router, your network card or with your Internet Service Provider.
Sorry I could not be of further help,
Regards,
Mark

ok I see some errors please check to see if in the /etc/apt/ you have sources.list, sources.
if you do please do the following sudo mv /etc/apt/
then type sudo cp /etc/apt/
type sudo apt-get update
this is so you don't delete files just replace then like this.. it will fix the malformed links
if you know of the extra sources you want added
add like so
goto System>
check all boxes
then in the tabs third party if you want them updates leave alone unless you know what you want
