Updating to next available version

Asked by NakiMum

This might have been asked already, but I don't seem to have found the right answer.
I've got Ubuntu 8.10 as only OS, when the next upgrade is available will it automatically let me know or do I have to download the whole program again and re-install?
I've got a second computer running Kubuntu/KDE 4.0, there's a 4.2 version - is there a way of updating or do I download and re-install?

Hi,

Open a terminal and enter the following command to attempt an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to Jaunty 9.04 (beta version):

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

If the upgrade fails or gives problems, then I recommend booting from the Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD and then installing from the LiveCD to overwrite the Ubuntu 8.10 system files.

Regards,

Mark

There is an alternative way: Ubuntu 8.10 will automatic show you a new release availability using the menu:
System → Administration → Update Manager

I don't know if there is something similar in Kubuntu...

The next release of Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope"is planned for april 2009

Related to kde4.2 http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-linux-install-kde-42/ (be warned, nightly snapshot)

Hope this helps

NOTE: Please don't upgrade your 8.10 release to 9.04 now (Jan 2009) it is in alpha state.

Hi marcobra
thanks for the tip. Luckily I haven't done anything yet. Was to busy trying to configure kubuntu/kde.
Will keep an eye out for the official upgrade in April by putting it on my calendar. I've got a brain like a sieve - don't remember much for long.
Keep well.
