unable to download updates, says do manually

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

The orange sun at the bottom of my screen says updates available every time i try the statement above comes up.

Marcobra is really the best one for this but in the meantime try opening a terminal console ...
Applications on the (bottom?) taskbar - Accessories - Terminal

Into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and then it'll probably ask for you user password (not your Root/SuperUser one). Someone else asked exactly this question much earlier and Marcobra came up with a much better answer. If you can find that then try it and let us know how it went.
