update-manager crashes on starting

Asked by gbmeyer

Binary package hint: update-manager

Ubuntu 8.04
Trying to fix a wireless problem and added a repository source to http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6
On the next opening of Update-Manager and also for Synaptic package manager I get the following error:

E:Malformed line 78 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse), E:The list of sources could not be read.

I wouldn't be in this situation if there was better support for the Atheros Communications wireless adapter.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs .

This is a wrong ( bad user customization settings rows ) line or lines found into /etc/apt/sources.list

Please correct it using a terminal

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

In gedit open menu Edit→Preferences→ [view tab ] check display line numbers

save and exit

retry to run System→Administration→ Update Manager, press the "Verify" button and update your system.

Hope this helps

Yep, I did that right after I posted. Mainly I was posting because the
update manager should handle the bad input more gracefully or at least
with a better message than it gave.

I agree with you be free to fill a bug about this issue.

Please report a bug related to the user interface of update-manager.
